Cozy Great Room Makeover

What we did!

The goal with this great room renovation was to make both the kitchen and living area function better for the busy family of five. A multi-phase approach allowed all the big-ticket items to be accomplished.

  • The orangy read oak floors were removed, and warm, wide-plank oak that ties in with the other wood tones in the space

  • We took advantage of the double-height ceiling in the family room by running the fireplace stone all the way to the ceiling. The stone helped add texture and warmth to the room while offering a bit of a nod to the Adirondacks that surround the area.

  • The furniture layout was changed to create a comfortable place for the family to gather and watch TV, and enjoy the fireplace on a comfy deep sectional.

  • In the kitchen, the window over the old sink was removed in order to have the range with a custom hood be the focal point of the kitchen.

  • A larger island that seats the whole family and more is the anchor of the space, with beautiful quartzite countertops that are contrasted by the charcoal cabinetry.

  • The opening to the living area was made smaller in order to fit a nice-sized wet bar on the wall close to the backdoor where lots of entertaining is done.

  • The kitchen has layered lighting, new recessed lighting, under-cabinet, in-cabinet, and the focal point of three pendants over the island.
